Reply to: Yes...a bit. They look and feel clunky. They are heavy for a minimal shoe (8.5 oz for size 44). And the tread is a bit over the top. Hopefully those initial impressions change today after my trail run, but so far it's not looking good. I'm getting a little turned off by VIVOBAREFOOT. First the Ultra (i.e. Croc) and now this? What everyone has been saying is make a lighter and cheaper shoe. Why is that so hard for them?

I have yet to throw down with the Ultras, but since durability is a biggie for me I don't know if I would like them at all.
The initial fit with the Neo Trails (considering they were a size small - a 44 vs. the 45 that I need) was actually pretty good. They are very padded in the heel, and the upper does really give a "boot-like" feel. The sole is classic VIVO, though, with significantly enhanced traction, of course. Not nearly as clunky on hard surfaces as I would have imagined (the opposite of the Baregrip 200s that I tried a while back).
As far as the direction of VIVOBAREFOOT - I feel like it's a bit of a mixed bag. They are definitely getting cheaper (althought I don't know the reported list price for the Trails), but the Neo and Neo trail are both heavier and significantly more in the upper than I would prefer in a road and trail shoe respectively. They do look darn nice though (personal taste).

I took mine out for what was supposed to be a 20 mile through Noble Canyon, one of the most hard core trails we have here. I ran 10 miles and had to walk the final 10 miles back to the car since the legs were still beat up from last weekend's race.
The shoes peformed better than I had expected. The one BIG knock on them as a trail shoe is that they drain very poorly. At one point I stood in a stream and my feet remained dry for about 10 seconds and then they finally filled with water. After that we took off running again and the shoes retained the water for a long, long, long time. The water was sloshing in the shoes for perhaps 1/2 hour which made for a very sloshy run. No surprise that my feet were very pruned after the run was done.
Another (small) knock is that they made a couple toes sore. Hoping I don't end up with black toenails.
